The Fourth Sorrowful Mystery: Jesus Carries His Cross

Pictured above: Detail from Christ Carrying the Cross by Vecellio Tiziano (Titian). c. 1565 Museo del Prado, Madrid.

Jesus carries the heavy cross upon His shoulders to Calvary. The virtue of patience is associated with this mystery.

  1. Jesus was led away, and carrying the cross by himself, went out to what is called the Place of the Skull (in Hebrew, Golgotha). (John 19:17)

  2. It was our infirmities that he bore, our sufferings that he endured. (Isaiah 53:4)

  3. As they led him away, they laid hold of one Simon the Cyrenean who was coming in from the fields. They put a crossbeam on Simon's shoulder for him to carry along behind Jesus. (Luke 23:26)

  4. "Take my yoke upon your shoulders, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart." (Matthew 11:29)

  5. If you endure suffering even when you have done right, God will bless you for it. It was to this that God called you, for Christ himself suffered for you and left you an example, so that you would follow in his steps. (1 Peter. 2:20–21)

  6. A great crowd of people followed him, including women who beat their breasts and lamented over him. Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me. Weep for yourselves and for your children." (Luke 23:27-28)

  7. Upon arriving at a site called Golgotha (a name which means Skull Place), they gave him a drink of wine flavored with gall, which he tasted but refused to drink. (Matthew 27:33–34)

  8. There they crucified him, and two others with him; one on either side, Jesus in the middle. (John 19:18)

  9. The inscription proclaiming his offense read, "THE KING OF THE JEWS." (Mark 15:26)

  10. He humbled himself, obediently accepting even death, death on a cross! (Phil. 2:8)
