The Third Sorrowful Mystery: Jesus Is Crowned with Thorns

Pictured above: Detail from the Mocking of Christ by Annibale Carracci. c. 1596. Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna.

In cruel mockery, the soldiers place a crown of thorns on Jesus' head. The virtue of courage is associated with this mystery.

  1. The procurator's soldiers… stripped him of his clothes and wrapped him in a scarlet military cloak. (Matthew 27:27–28)

  2. Weaving a crown of thorns, they fixed it on his head, and stuck a reed in his right hand. (Matthew 27:29)

  3. Then they began to mock him by dropping to their knees before him, saying, "All hail! King of the Jews!" They also spat at him. Afterward they took hold of the reed and kept striking him on the head. (Matthew 27:29–30)

  4. When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak, Pilate said [to the Jews], "Look at the man!"
    (John 19:5)

  5. As many were astonished at him – his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the sons of men. (Isaiah 52:14)

  6. At this they shouted, "Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!" "What!" Pilate exclaimed, "Shall I crucify your king?" The chief priests replied, "We have no king but Caesar." (John 19:15)

  7. [Pilate] called for water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, declaring as he did so, "I am innocent of the blood of this just man. The responsibility is yours." (Matthew 27:24)

  8. The whole people said in reply, "Let his blood be on us and on our children." (Matthew 27:25)

  9. In the end, Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified. (John 19:16)

  10. Pilate had an inscription placed on the cross which read, "Jesus the Nazorean, the King of the Jews." (John 19:19)
