On the night before He was to be crucified, Jesus prayed as He contemplated the sins of the world. Contrition is associated with this mystery.
- He went out and made his way, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives: his disciples accompanied him. (Luke 22:39)
- Jesus said to them, "My heart is nearly broken with sorrow. Remain here and stay awake with me." (Matthew 26:38)
- He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, then went down on his knees and prayed in these words: "Father, if it is your will, take this cup
from me; yet not my will but yours be done." (Luke 22:41–42)
- In his anguish he prayed with all the greater intensity, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.
(Luke 22:44)
- Then he rose from prayer and came to his disciples, only to find them asleep. (Luke 22:45)
- He said to Peter, "So you could not stay awake with me for even an hour?" (Matthew 26:40)
- While he was still speaking a crowd came, led by the man named Judas, one of the Twelve. He approached Jesus to embrace him. (Luke 22:47)
- Jesus said to him, "Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?" (Luke 22:48)
- Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the slave of the high priest, severing his right ear. (John 18:10)
- At that, Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back in its sheath. Am I not to drink the cup the Father has given me?"
(John 18:11)
