The Fifth Mystery of Light: The Eucharist

Pictured above: Detail from The Institution of the Eucharist by Nicolas Poussin.1640. Musée du Louvre, Paris.

Jesus offers his body and blood as food under the signs of bread and wine, and testifies "to the end" His love for humanity, for whose salvation He will offer Himself in sacrifice. Adoration is associated with this mystery.

  1. "You should not be working for perishable food but for food that remains unto life eternal, food which the Son of Man will give you." (John 6:27)

  2. "I myself am the living bread come down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread he shall live forever; the bread I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world." (John 6:51)

  3. "He who feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has life eternal and I will raise him up on the last day… The man who feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him." (John 6:54-56)

  4. From this time on, many of his disciples broke away and would not remain in his company any longer. Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you want to leave me too?" (John 6:66–67)

  5. Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." (John 6:68)

  6. Before the feast of Passover, Jesus realized that the hour had come for him to pass from this world to the Father. He had loved his own in this world, and would show his love for them to the end. (John 13:1)

  7. During the [Passover] meal Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to his disciples. "Take this and eat it," he said, "this is my body." (Matthew 26:26)

  8. Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them. "All of you must drink from it," he said, "for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, to be poured out in behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins." (Matthew 26:27-28)

  9. "Do this as a remembrance of me." (Luke 22:19)

  10. Every time, then, you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes!
    (1 Corinthians 11:26)
