The heavens open wide and the voice of the Father declares Jesus the beloved Son. Openness to the Holy Spirit is associated with this mystery.
- Thus it was that John the Baptizer appeared in the desert, proclaiming a baptism of
repentance which led to the forgiveness of sins. (Mark 1:4)
- All the Judean countryside and the people of Jerusalem went out to him in great
numbers. They were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they confessed
their sins. (Mark 1:5)
- The theme of John's preaching was: "One more powerful than I is to come after me. I am
not fit to stoop and untie his sandal straps." (Mark 1:7)
- "I have baptized you in water; he will baptize you in the Holy Spirit." (Mark 1:8)
- Later Jesus, coming from Galilee, appeared before John at the Jordan to be baptized by
him. (Matthew 3:13)
- When John caught sight of Jesus coming toward him, he exclaimed: "Look! There is the
Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29)
- John tried to refuse him with the protest: "I should be baptized by you, yet you come
to me!" Jesus answered: "Give in for now. We must do this if we would fulfill all of God's
demands." So John gave in. (Matthew 3:14–15)
- Immediately on coming up out of the water Jesus saw the sky rent in two and the Spirit
descending on him like a dove. (Mark 1:10)
- Then a voice came from the heavens, "You are my beloved Son. On you my favor rests." (Mark 1:11)
- At that point the Spirit sent Jesus out toward the desert. Jesus stayed in the wasteland forty days, put to the test there by Satan. (Mark 1:12–13)
