Pictured above: Detail from the Annunciation by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo.1660-65. Museo del Prado, Madrid.

The Angel Gabriel appears to Mary, announcing she is to be the Mother of God. The virtue of humility is associated with this mystery.

  1. The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. (Luke 1:26)

  2. Upon arriving, the angel said to her, "Rejoice, O highly favored daughter! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women." (Luke 1:28)

  3. She was deeply troubled by his words, and wondered what his greeting meant. (Luke 1:29)

  4. The angel went on to say to her, "Do not fear, Mary. You have found favor with God. You shall conceive and bear a son and give him the name Jesus." (Luke 1:30–31)

  5. Mary said to the angel, "How can this be since I do not know man?" (Luke 1:34)

  6. The angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Hence, the holy offspring to be born will be called Son of God." (Luke 1:35)

  7. Mary said, "I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say." (Luke 1:38)

  8. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us… (John 1:14)

  9. The angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph and said to him: "Joseph, son of David, have no fear about taking Mary as your wife. It is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived this child." (Matthew 2:20)

  10. When Joseph awoke he did as the angel of the Lord had directed him and received her into his home as his wife.
    (Matthew 2:24)
