Pictured above: Detail from the Assumption of the Virgin by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. 1670s. The Hermitage, St. Petersburg.
At the end of her earthly course, Mary is assumed into heavenly glory, body and soul. The grace of a holy death is associated with this mystery.
- "I am indeed going to prepare a place for you, and then I shall come back to take you with me, that where I am you also may be." (John 14:3)
- My lover speaks; he says to me, "Arise, my beloved, my beautiful one, and come!" (Song 2:10)
- Hear, O daughter, and see; turn your ear, forget your people and your father's house. So shall the king desire your beauty; for he is your lord. (Psalm 45:11–12)
- All glorious is the king's daughter as she enters; her raiment is threaded with spun gold. In embroidered apparel she is borne in to the king. (Psalm 45:14–15)
- You are the glory of Jerusalem, the surpassing joy of Israel. ... God is pleased with what you have wrought. May you be blessed by the Lord Almighty
forever and ever! (Judith 15:10)
- The angel Gabriel said to her, "Rejoice, O highly favored daughter! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women." (Luke 1:28)
- Mary said, "My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit finds joy in God my savior. For he has looked upon his servant in her lowliness; all
ages to come shall call me blessed." (Luke 1:46–48)
- "God who is mighty has done great things for me, holy is his name. His mercy is from age to age on those who fear him." (Luke 1:49–50)
- I will rejoice greatly in the Lord, my soul will exult in my God; for he has clothed me with garments of salvation, he has wrapped me with a robe of
righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. (Isaiah 61:10)
- Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love him. (1 Corinthians 2:9)
